Decluttering Checklist Printable: Free Room-by-Room Guide

Feeling overwhelmed by the thought of decluttering your entire home? When every room feels like it needs attention, figuring out where to start can be the hardest part. That’s where a decluttering checklist printable can make the process so much easier.
This free room-by-room checklist gives you a clear plan to follow, breaking your home into manageable areas so you don’t feel like you have to tackle everything at once. It also includes suggested timelines to help you stay focused and make steady progress.
Instead of wondering what to declutter next, you can simply work your way through the checklist and check off each area as you finish. Those small wins make decluttering your entire home feel much more manageable.
Whether you’re clearing out years of accumulated clutter or giving your home a much-needed reset, this free printable decluttering checklist will help you work through your home one room at a time.
Before You Start Using Your Decluttering Checklist Printable
1. Decide the Order You Will Tackle Each Room
Decide which rooms you want to tackle first. You might start with a smaller space, like the bathroom, then move on to a larger area such as the kitchen or bedroom. Alternating between smaller and larger projects can help you maintain momentum.
You can also plan your rooms around the time you have available. Save bigger projects, like the basement or kitchen, for days when you have more time. And remember, you do not have to finish an entire room in one day. Simply pick up where you left off.
On my free decluttering checklist printable, you can number each room in the order you plan to tackle it. If you’re feeling overwhelmed about getting started, check out my post on how to breakthrough the overwhelm and start decluttering to help you declutter in manageable steps.
2. Set Realistic Expectations & Timelines
Don’t expect to declutter your entire home in one day or weekend. Set realistic goals based on the size of each space and the time you have available.
On the free decluttering checklist printable, you can add a projected completion date for each room. You might devote a Saturday to the kitchen, then tackle a smaller space like the bathroom after work one evening.
3. Gather YOUR DECLUTTERING SUPPLIES
Gather everything you need before you begin, such as garbage bags, boxes, labels, and markers. Decide where items you’re keeping, donating, selling, recycling, and tossing will go so you have a system in place before you start.
How to Decide What to Keep, Donate, Sell, or Toss?

One of the hardest parts of decluttering is deciding what to do with everything once you start sorting.
As you work through your decluttering checklist, sort items into five simple categories: keep, donate, sell, recycle, or toss. Having a few guidelines in mind before you begin can help you make decisions faster and avoid overthinking every item.
I also like to include a sell category when I declutter. I often come across things I no longer need that are still valuable enough to list on Facebook Marketplace. Personally, I usually save the sell pile for items worth around $40 or more, but you can choose an amount that makes selling worth your time.
Simple Decluttering rules:
Toss: broken, stained, expired, outdated, or no longer usable.
Recycle: If it’s made from materials accepted by your local recycling program, such as paper, cardboard, glass, or certain plastics.
Donate: If it’s still in good condition and could be useful to someone else, but you no longer need, use, or love it.
Sell: If it’s in good condition and valuable enough that the money you could make is worth the time and effort of selling it.
Keep: If you use it regularly, genuinely love it, need it, or it serves a purpose in your home.
If you’re having trouble deciding what to do with something, ask yourself: Would I buy this again today? Do I actually use it? Would I miss it if it were gone? These questions can make it much easier to decide what deserves a place in your home.
Room by Room Decluttering Checklist Printable
Now it’s time to start working through your home. I’ve organized this room by room decluttering checklist printable into smaller categories so you can focus on one area at a time instead of trying to tackle an entire room at once.
Use the list below as a guide for what to sort through in each space. You can also use your printable checklist to keep track of the rooms you’ve completed, the order you plan to tackle them, and your projected completion dates.

Kitchen Decluttering
The kitchen is one of the busiest areas of the home, which means clutter can build up quickly in cabinets, drawers, on countertops, and in the pantry. As you work through your home decluttering checklist, get rid of expired food, duplicate kitchen tools, unused appliances, and anything you no longer reach for. If your pantry needs extra attention, start by decluttering and organizing your pantry by categories so everything you keep has a designated place.
Once you’ve finished decluttering, you can organize your kitchen cabinets and drawers by zones and tackle your kitchen countertops to create a more functional, clutter-free kitchen. You can also grab my free Kitchen Organization Chart to help decide where everything should go.

What to Do After You Declutter
You’ve finished sorting through your space, but there’s one more important step: get everything you decided to remove out of your home. Don’t let donation bags and boxes become a new source of clutter.
- 🗑️ Take Out the Trash: Get rid of trash as soon as you finish decluttering so you aren’t tempted to second guess your decisions.
- 💰 List Items You Want to Sell: List anything you plan to sell as soon as possible. Give yourself a deadline, and if it doesn’t sell by then, consider donating it.
- ♻️ Recycle Right Away: Move recyclable items directly to your recycling bin so they don’t become another pile in your home.
- 🤍Donate Items Promptly: Put donation bags or boxes in your car or schedule a pickup so they actually leave your home.
Other Decluttering Resources
- The 90/90 Minimalism Rule: Ask yourself two questions about an item: Have I used it in the past 90 days? Will I use it in the next 90 days? If the answer to both is no, it may be time to let it go.
- The 1-3-5 Method: Turn decluttering into manageable daily tasks by choosing one larger project, three medium tasks, and five small tasks to tackle.
- The KonMari Method: Declutter by category rather than by room and focus on keeping belongings that are useful or bring you joy.
