Our bedroom should be the most calming and tranquil space in our home. It’s where we recharge after a stressful day, binge-watch our favorite shows, and, of course, get our beauty rest. Yet, the truth is, bedrooms are the easiest place in our home to neglect. Too often becoming a clutter storage unit for random items we accumulate over time.
Piles of clothes, forgotten books, kids toys, bathroom essentials, and miscellaneous items can quickly take over the room. Making it super difficult to relax and unwind. When clutter builds up, it can affect not just the look of your bedroom, but also your mood and sleep quality.
The good news is, by following these simple steps on how to organize your bedroom, you can reclaim your space with ease and create a calming, clutter-free haven you’ll love. If you’re ready to create a calming, clutter-free haven and finally ditch the mess, you’re in the right place.
Now let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of bedroom organization. In this post, I’m sharing how to organize your bedroom with 30 practical and effective bedroom organization ideas.
1. Declutter Your Bedroom Section by Section
Organizing and decluttering go hand in hand. If your bedroom is overflowing with stuff, it’s important to declutter before diving into organizing. Think of it as creating a clean, blank canvas that feels clutter-free and manageable. Once the clutter is gone, it becomes so much easier to group items together and organize with intention.
Understanding how to organize your bedroom starts with creating a clutter-free, manageable space by decluttering section by section. As you work through each area, decide what to keep, toss, donate, and relocate.
Ask yourself what you truly need or what serves a meaningful purpose. Be honest with yourself and don’t hold on to things out of guilt. Keeping too much will defeat the purpose of organizing in the first place. Donate and discard what no longer aligns with the zen atmosphere you are trying to create.
Sections of your bedroom to declutter
- All surfaces: Make sure all surfaces are clean and free from clutter. Surfaces include the floor, furniture surfaces, and the walls.
- Closets: Go through your clothes, shoes, accessories, and anything you else you store in your closet. Donate or toss items you no longer wear or need.
- Clothing Dressers: Sort through every drawer. Fold and organize what you’re keeping, and remove anything that’s worn out, unused, or no longer suits you.
- Nightstand: Clear out random cords, books you’re no longer reading, trash, and anything else that doesn’t contribute to a neat drawer.
- Under the Bed: This space often becomes a catch-all for forgotten items. Pull everything out and only keep what’s useful and intentionally stored.
- On the Bed: Remove excess pillows, blankets, decorative items, clothes, and anything else making your bed feel cluttered.
- Makeup and Personal Care Items: If you keep makeup, skincare, or grooming supplies in your bedroom, go through and toss expired or unused products.
- Other Furniture: Declutter any additional furniture like desks, chairs, or shelves. These can easily accumulate “stuff” if not maintained regularly.
As the organizing expert Marie Kondo famously said, “The question of what you want to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life.” Let that quote guide you as you transform your space. And, now that you know the basics of how to organize your bedroom, let’s focus on one of the most critical areas…the closet.
2. Keep Your Closet Tidy

In my opinion, the closet is the most important area to keep organized in your bedroom. It’s like the command center for the whole room. If your closet is messy, there’s a good chance the rest of your room is, too. Since we pull so many things from our closets, it’s easy for clutter to pile up quickly if we don’t put them back right away.
Closets usually hold the most items in a bedroom, which makes them both the biggest source of mess and the easiest place to start decluttering. It’s important that you create a closet system where everything has a designated spot and make it a habit to return items after each use. 3. Upgrade to Matching Velvet Hangers
Ditch the bulky, mismatched hangers and get matching velvet ones. You won’t regret it!
Personally, I think plastic hangers look really cheap, but they’re also oddly bulky, taking up more closet space. Velvet hangers are a game changer! They are slim, stylish, and give your closet a more organized and cohesive look.
4. Color Coordinate Your Clothes

There is something undeniably satisfying about opening up your closet doors or drawers and seeing everything arranged like a rainbow. I started color coordinating my clothes over a decade ago and never looked back. I definitely do not wear the rainbow. I am more of a neutral, earth tones girl myself, but I still color coordinate using the colors I wear most.
If you want a simple system to get started, check out my guide on how to create a color coordinated closet in just 5 simple steps, where I walk through the process step-by-step.
It makes putting together outfits much easier and cuts down the time it takes to get dressed. I can actually find what I’m looking for without rummaging through hanger after hanger, and it even helped me realize how many black shirts I own, which is far too many.
5. Rotate Seasonal Clothing
I have a lot of clothes but limited closet space, so I always store my out-of-season clothes in the attic. If you are in the same boat, I highly recommend doing the same thing.
Pick up some storage bins from Target or Walmart, and every fall and spring rotate your out-of-season clothes. This way, your closet won’t be stuffed to the brim, and you’ll only keep the clothes you need for that season.
6. Use Decorative Bins To Store Items On Shelves

I am a big believer in using bins to keep things neat and contained, and labeling them is like the cherry on top. I just love it when everything has its place, especially when the storage is just as pretty as it is practical.
Decorative bins are perfect for bedroom shelves, whether inside your closet or out in the open. If you’re trying to figure out how to organize your bedroom in a stylish yet practical way, bins are a great first step.
7. Maximize Space With a Built-in Closet Storage System

When learning how to organize your bedroom, one of my favorite strategies is investing in a built-in closet storage system that maximizes your closet storage space. These systems ensure that every inch of your closet works for you, not against you.
Before installing any new system, though, it’s important to declutter what you already have. If your closet is overflowing, start by removing the items you no longer wear. I share simple steps for this in my guide on How to Declutter Your Closet and Make Space for What You Wear.
Built-ins are customized to fit your closet’s dimensions, which means every square inch is being used effectively. You can add shelves, drawers, hanging rods at different heights, and even specialty sections for shoes, accessories, and bags. Built ins can also increase the value of your home, so even if you can’t swing it now, it will definitely be a great investment for the future.
8. Add a Dresser in the Closet to Add More Closet Storage Space
When I was planning my son’s nursery, we had a tall dresser, that no longer fit in his room, once all his new furniture arrived. Instead of selling it, I decided to store the dresser in his closet for extra storage space.
I’m really glad I did because that added space saved us from running out of room to store essentials. Adding a dresser to your closet is a smart way to maximize unused vertical space and keep things organized without overcrowding the room.
9. Hang Organizers on Doors

If you’re looking for clever ideas on how to organize your bedroom, don’t skip out on hanging organizers. Hanging organizers on doors, whether hung up on your bedroom closet doors or on your bedroom door, are a great way to add extra storage space to your bedroom.
I currently use one in my closet to neatly store workout clothes, bodysuits, extra shoes, and purses. It helps free up valuable room in both my dresser drawers and closet, making everything feel more spacious and organized.
10. Use Shelf Dividers in Your Closet

Shelf dividers are one of the easiest upgrades you can make in your closet. If you’ve ever taken the time to neatly stack jeans, sweaters, or handbags only to have them topple over, you know how frustrating it is to live without shelf dividers.
Shelf dividers create clearly defined spaces on your shelves, keeping similar items together, and preventing everything from toppling over or blending into one big mess.
11. Store Your Shoes Vertically
One of the best space-saving hacks I swear by is storing your shoes vertically. Instead of tossing shoes in a pile or lining them up on the floor, going vertical keeps them organized, easy to see, and quick to grab. I love using over-the-door shoe organizers or tiered vertical shoe racks that sit on your closet floor. They make your shoes look neat and easy to find.
12. Hang Your Jeans for Better Visibility

If you are a person who owns more than a couple of pairs of jeans, hanging them in your closet it definitely a game changer. I am such a jean gal myself, and if I had the closet space, I’d 100% hang my jeans.
Right now, I have to fold and stack them in my drawer, which leaves me to reach for the same two pairs over and over again. Hanging your jeans, keeps them visible, easy to grab, and you can actually rotate through each pair. Oh, and might I add wrinkle free.
13. Make Your Bed Daily
If you want your bedroom to look instantly more organized, make it a habit to make your bed every morning. I have to be honest, I wasn’t always that person, but now it’s an absolute must for me. Our beds are usually the largest piece of furniture in our bedroom and the first thing you see when you walk into the room. An unmade bed can make the whole space feel messy and chaotic. Plus, when the bed is a mess, it’s easy to let the clutter pile up elsewhere too.
14. Get a Bed Frame With Built-in Storage Bins
If you’re short on space, lacking in closet storage, or just want to make the most of every square inch of your bedroom, investing in a bed frame with built-in storage is a smart idea.
I wish I thought of this before buying my bed frame, but sadly, I didn’t. Having built-in drawers or compartments under your bed makes it so much easier to store extra clothes, bedding, or even shoes without taking up precious closet or dresser space. If you’re shopping for a new bed, you may want to consider one with storage options.
