Bringing your baby into the world is one of life’s most beautiful and unforgettable moments. From the moment you meet your little one, you are filled with an overwhelming sense of love.
As we all know or have heard, the first few weeks with a newborn can be quite hectic and overwhelming. From feedings, to diaper changes, soothing cries, midnight wakes, you will be taking on a lot.
That’s where baby nursery organization can truly make a difference in reducing the feelings of overwhelm. An organized nursery definitely made life easier for me when my son Bryson was born. In this post, I will not only teach you how to group baby items together, but I will also teach you about different organizational systems that will make your nursery super organized.
How to Group Nursery Baby Items
Babies come with so much dang stuff! That is why organization will be your best friend when you begin setting up your nursery.
A great organization practice is to start by taking inventory of the items you have and group similar items together. This will help you identify what organizational systems you will need for your nursery.
Once you have your nursery items, you can group them based on categories on your floor and put a post-it of the tile of the category on top of the pile. Another strategy is to write out your list of nursery items on paper and group them on paper. Below is an example of how to group nursery baby items.

Once you have your items all grouped, it is time to think about what organizational systems you will need for all your nursery items.
Pro Tips For Saving Room in your Organizational systems:
- If you received several of one item, such as 12 swaddles, you do not need to store all of them in the nursery.
- You can create a box where you store if needed items.
- If you have limited space, really think of where other items can go in the house.
- For example, babies medicine and health items could go in the bathroom.
- Throw out any garbage items or giveaway items you received from people that you don’t like or want. Don’t feel like you need to keep it because somebody gave it to you.
- For example, I received an old stuffed animal and blanket that I had no interest in keeping. So I said, “bye bye”.
Types of Nursery Organization Systems
Baby nursery organization systems are ways to keep a nursery clutter-free, tidy, and efficient. These systems make life easier by providing a designated space for everything, so you will always be able to find what you require easily and quickly. Organizational systems include furniture drawers, closets, drawer organizers, bin storage, and so much more. I will go into these systems in more detail in the sections below.
Nursery Dresser Changing Station
A nursery dresser changing station will be the place where you will be changing many diapers and completing numerous outfit changes. I recommend a large dresser for your nursery if it will fit, as it provides more storage space. If your nursery is smaller, you can also find a smaller dresser that can hold plenty.

An organization system set up on top of your dresser will make life easier for you. You will be able to grab all your diapering essentials quickly. Especially, when you’re dealing with those not so pleasant diapers.
In this diaper caddy, basket or bin, you want to keep the following items handy:
Here is a cute Boho inspired diaper caddy that is stylish and functional. For a more gender-neutral look, a wicker diaper bin is a great option that looks lovely on top of a dresser.
Dresser Drawers
Nursery dresser drawers are perfect for storing various baby items such as baby clothes, self-care items, extra diapers, ointment, and creams. Dresser drawers can be organized in many ways, but the key is to align your organization to your routines.
One essential drawer, I think is a must, is a “diapering draw” stocked with extra diapers, wipes, and diaper rash cream and ointment. That way, if you run low on diapers in your top of your dresser bin, you can quickly grab a refill from the drawer. Here are some examples of ways you can organize your nursery drawers:
3 Drawer Dresser Example

- Draw 1: health & wellness, wipes, cotton balls, and diapers
- Draw 2: short sleeve onesies, long sleeve onesies, and pants
- Draw 3: sleeping pajamas and sacks, swaddles, and hats
6 Drawer Dresser Example
- Draw 1: Health & Wellness Items: Pacifiers, nose sucker, thermometer, cradle cap scrubber, hairbrush
- Draw 2: Extra Diapers (Divider)-Wipes (Divider)-Diapering ointments & Creams
- Draw 3: Newborn clothes
- Draw 4: 0-3 Month clothes
- Draw 5: Swaddles, burp clothes, & cloth bibs
- Draw 6: Shoes, hats, & whatever else you need to store.
Draw dividers and cloth drawer organizers separate the items in your drawers by categories. I used both of these products in my son’s dresser draws, and I loved how I could easily find everything. Once you have your drawers separated by categories, you can label your dresser drawers with the use of a label maker. I recently purchased this label maker, and I love how it works so far.
Closet Baby Nursery Organization
What baby nursery organization items are you storing in your closet? The most common items to hang up or store in a closet include outfits, shirts, pants, jackets, sweaters, and shoes. Some parents even prefer to hang up their onesies to monitor how many clothes that have for each age group.

You can organize the clothing by age with closet dividers. Here are some gender-neutral closet dividers I purchased for my son’s nursery, that you see above. These dividers are great quality and I love the little branch on each one of them.
Depending on the size of your closet, you may want to invest in an organization system. You can either DIY your own closet system or hire a professional to do so. This is especially helpful if your closet does not have a quality organization system in place.
Here are some examples of closet organization systems:

This neutral nursery closet is so warm and inviting. The baby items are organized with a shelving system that includes shelves, cubbies, bins, and of course, a clothing rod. You can find similar products here for your closet:

Pro Tip: Always measure your shelves and bins to see if your bins will fit on the shelves before purchasing.

These organizational systems are a key part of baby nursery organization and will make your life easier.
